Alpine Start Grant

The Alpine Start grant commemorates Justin Fantasia, a member of Juneau’s climbing community. Justin worked to promote access to outdoor activities and education through his involvement in various non-profit organizations throughout Alaska. Sadly, Justin’s life was cut short by brain cancer and this grant is designed to continue his passion for reaching new places and taking on physically and mentally challenging objectives with the next generation of Juneau’s climbers.

Climbing trips of any variety are encouraged and can be supported by The Alpine Start Grant. Ideally, your proposed project will be something that builds on your existing climbing experience to provide new opportunities for technical, physical and mental growth. Awards from the Alpine Start Grant can be put towards helping you achieve your climbing objective, whether that is gear, transportation, food, or other needs.

Awards

  • Awards vary depending on the proposed project, and budget, but may range from $200 - $500.

  • Awards will be distributed annually and announced at the Rock Dump’s fundraiser held in the Spring.

  • The Alpine Start grant has been generously funded by the family, friends, and former students of Justin Fantasia.

Criteria

To increase your chances of receiving the Alpine Start grant, please complete the application in a thoughtful and compelling way. The selection committee is looking for the following:

  • Applicants must be members of the Rock Dump.

  • This grant is specifically designed to promote young climbers.  Applicants should be between 18 and 25 years of age.

  • The grant is open to all disciplines of climbing pursuits.

  • Funds must be used within one year of receiving the grant.

  • All travel to/from or through the land must be in accordance with requirements of local jurisdictions.

  • The Alpine Start grant is awarded to individuals only. If you are traveling as part of a team, only one team member may receive the grant.

  • Your application (Google Form) should be in your own words and not be written by AI. Justin had a low tolerance for lazy people. Your application should be well edited.

Application

  • The application period begins June 1st and closes January 31st.

  • The winning applicant will be notified by email.

Responsibilities

  • Grant recipients will share trip photos and/or a presentation/slideshow at the Rock Dump within 6 months of completing the climb.

  • If for any reason the project is canceled or significantly changed, the funds awarded must be returned to the Rock Dump/Alpine Start grant in full.  Please contact the Rock Dump (jessie@rockdump.com) if your proposal changes.

  • Recipients should honor Justin’s memory by practicing low impact and leave no trace ethics.

  • Be safe, have fun, and be a good human.
