I've never climbed before, how fit do I need to be?

While climbing does require a certain level of fitness, you do not have to be an expert or in really good shape to come in an try it. In your first session, you should expect your forearms to fatigue first because their use is unique to climbing.  With practice, your overall fitness, technique, and performance will improve.

What should I wear when climbing?

The gym can be little cold sometimes, but once you get up and climbing you will quickly warm up. We always suggest that people wear clothes that they can easily move around in (like workout clothes) in layers. Climbing shoes are required but can be rented from the gym for $5 a session.

Are there any age restrictions?

You must be 14 years old to belay at The Rock Dump, and if you're under 18 we have additional rules about belaying (see below). You must also be 14 to climb unsupervised (without an adult present). A child under 14 may climb with a sibling or another person 14 or older with the permission of their parent or legal guardian and a signed Warranty and Release from The Rock Dump. There are, however NO AGE RESTRICTIONS FOR CLIMBING. We have special harnesses for very small children, routes designed for smaller wingspans, and we have had kids as young as 4 and 5 years old climb all over the gym.

Can I learn to belay?

All belayers are required to pass a belay test in order to belay unsupervised. If you have no prior experience belaying, you will need to take the 1hr Belay Class. This is available through reservation on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. To make reservations click HERE. Classes will not be held on Saturday if there are no reservations by closing of the Friday before.

Can I climb by myself?

Yes!  There are two types of climbing offered for those who come in solo. We have four Auto-belay units that allow climbers to climb without the need of a belayer. There is also an extensive bouldering area where climbers can challenge themselves on a wide variety of wall angles and routes. If you are interested in exploring the rest of the gym a partner will be required to belay.

Do I need to reserve time to climb in advance?

No, you do not need to reserve time to climb in advance. You can come in any time and learn how to climb.  In order to reserve a group session and receive the group rate, you must book the group in advance. Also, if you need belay training it is best to call ahead.
